About Rudrapur

A small city situated in Terai region in the state of Uttarakhand, Rudrapur is also a Nagar Nigam or district headquarters housed within the district of Udham Singh Nagar. As a city, Rudrapur was originally built as a camp for sheltering refugees migrating or exiled from Burma, West Punjab and Pakistan during 1960s. Spread across an area of 2908 kilometer square, Rudrapur borders on the fringes of Kumaon surrounded by the beatific Himalayas and forms a part of sub divisions including Kashipur, Sitarganj, Bazpur and Khatima. Rudrapur is mainly a fertile land where the people resort to agriculture as their prime occupation as well as an industrial belt where several factories of Delta, Zandu, Britannia, Ashok Leyland, Bajaj, Tata Motors and Dabur have been set up.

History of Rudrapur

Legends and folklore are plenty regarding the formation of Rudrapur city erstwhile village in Udham Singh Nagar district of Uttarakhand. Some are of the view that Rudrapur came into existence due to a follower of Lord Rudra (Shiva) while some say that this place came into vogue due to Rudra Chand, ruler of Chand dynasty in Kumaon region. King Rudra Chand it is assumed received this piece of land as a gift from Mughal Emperor Akbar in the year 1588. He converted the region into a military encampment to ensure the safety of Terai from regular intrusion. King Rudra is also considered to have constructed the renowned Atariya Temple while being stuck in this land filled with marshes, swamp, constant rainfall and humid heat.

Later when the British left India and post partition the problem of migration occurred, Rudrapur became a refugee camp where now people from Haryana, Garhwal, Kashmir, Kumaon, Kerala, Eastern UP, Rajasthan and Nepal have lived in unison for a long time. It is the reason why Terai is known as Mini Hindustan.

Geography of Rudrapur

Rudrapur is located at an angle of 28.98° N and 79.40° E. the city shares its border with Uttar Pradesh and lies in close proximity with Nainital, Kashipur, Kathgodam, Moradabad, Bareilly and several other cities. Rudrapur’s weather is humid due to the marshy land surrounding it and it receives good rainfall throughout the year. The local dialect is Hindi and Punjabi.
